          Levi Strausswas born on February 26, 1829, in Buttenheim, Germany, to Hirsch and Rebecca Haas Strauss.

          6. He was one of seven children, including three older brothers and three older sisters. In 1845, his father passed away from consumption, and two years later, Strauss, his mother, and two sisters immigrated to New York City.

          Business Ventures and Immigration to San Francisco

          After joining his brothers' textile business in New York, Strauss changed his name to the more "American" Levi.

          In 1853, he relocated to San Francisco during the California Gold Rush, hoping to make his fortune. He established a dry goods company and sold various items to miners and settlers.

          In 1872, Strauss received
