Fisher was born in 1959 in a prison hospital to a single mother; his father had been killed by a different girlfriend months earlier.
Fisher is placed in an orphanage shortly after birth, and then in a temporary foster home. At about age 2, he is transferred to a second foster home, that of Rev. and Mrs. Pickett of Cleveland, a middle-age couple “with grown children of their own, children from previous marriages, and grandchildren,” as well as several other foster children.
